Heater or heat panel -10

@dirkandlorie

I had to chuckle. In Quebec where I live the hydro utility offers payment options that reward people who are energy conscious. If one enrolls they notify via email or text of upcoming events on very cold days (6 to 10 am and/or 4 to 8pm) where if one makes an effort and actually use less energy than they normally do they will get a credit for each kwh saved of 10 times the usual cost.

I set alarms on my phone to remind and switch off the breakers for my baseboard heaters AND build fires in the two woodstoves (upstairs and downstairs). They record the savings on one's account the following morning so one can see how effective their efforts are. I normally use less energy than 75% of homes of similar size in the province.

The utility goes even further. They have graduated options that set a challenge if one wants. Their most rewarding option gives much greater credits but also penalize if savings are nor realized. (I am not perfect and make mistakes so have not yet elected this option. One day I might simply to challenge myself.)

The utility goes even further. They will install smart thermostats whereever needed (each baseboard, furnace, etc.) that they can control to automatically reduce or turnoff the appliance without human intervention. They do this free of charge for the cost of the thermostat AND THE COST OF THE ELECTRICIAN WHO HAS TO COME TO YOUR HOME TO DO THE INSTALLATION. Non trivial as the total can run into hundreds, even low thousands to effect. I have not elected to do this since it is an easy thing to do manually if one is disciplined AND I do not trust the government or the utility to not use this power when I do not want them to.

Quebec has an abundant supply of electricity due to it's size, geography, and plethora of hydro electric dams. They also have the lowest cost to consumers for energy in North America.

There is currently great concern by energy activists and some consumers because the current government wants to entice builders/operators of large AI data centers to come to the province. For this and other reasons the current government will be booted out of power in the upcoming election.

Energy matters and more folks should be concerned about usage.

I bought two heating panels from « Ma poule express » and installed them on the wall on either sides of the roosting bars inside the coop. They are controlled by a thermostat and start heating up when it’s -2 degrees Celsius. The chickens huddle close to them when they need the extra heat and I don’t need to worry about fire hazards. The surface gets hot, but not enough to cause injury. As mentioned, it doesn’t prevent them from going out to eat and scratch around. It works great for my setup.

I don't think I like the idea of our government or utility company controlling my electricity. I'm much too independent for that. I can however be incentivied. Give me bigger discounts and lower bills and I'll make the effort, lol.

They don’t control our electricity, they use incentives to avoid wasting it. Unfortunately when something is inexpensive, people tend to take it for granted and waste it.

That application is free of charge and the customer chooses to have an automated program to lower and increase power during cold spells. It’s an incentive to lower our electricity cost, and from what I understand in your post, you would appreciate 😊

I totally agree.

However, the discounts that I control allow me to keep my ANNUAL electrical costs well under $1,000 for a well build 4 bedroom 2400sq ft house. For this I will get up at 5:30am to switch off breakers and be home to repeat at 4pm. There is also the fact that I live alone and only have myself to keep happy.

The customer chooses until the smart thermostats are installed. After that all bets are of because they have complete control unless one replaces the smart thermostats with the old "stupid" ones.

I am disciplined enough to control what I have to gain a $100-$150 discount each year. It will take a lot (eg cannot get out of bed or walk) to get me to even consider it.

Think you're smart to cut the breakers to stop electricity usage. I'm home 24/7 so I just use the little outlet cubes with off/on switches. Anything not actually being used is not getting electricity. I get a couple months a year free from the solar panels, and a few times they've paid me for the electricity I've produced (not often enough, lol). Our homes are comparable, 3 bedroom 2500 square feet, but dang I had to pay a fortune for that solar equipment to be paying about the same amount as you do for the year. You're doing great!!!
