Heating pad in the coop?

I'm also in SE Minnesota...Rochester. I considered a Sweeter Heater at one point, thinking it might help to give them just a bit of warmth on their roost overnight, when it is coldest.

If you are thinking of something like the Cozy Coop flat panel heater...don’t. I think it is mostly useless. Unless a chicken stands right next to it, and I mean practically touching it, they won’t feel anything. It won’t heat an area either.

That said, I have one in my coop that I only turn on when the temps get down below 0. It gives me peace of mind, but I know it isn’t really doing anything.

Last winter, on one of our -35f nights, the temp in the coop was -30f, and that was with the heater on. During the day, it got up to -23f, and the chickens totally ignored the heater. They spent that entire day outside in the run.

Point is, they don’t need it, and mind don’t even acknowledge it’s existence.

I agree with most of this, being from WI, we can have the same cold at times. Last winter was BRUTAL !! When we had those -30 to -40F temps, I keep the girls locked inside the coop because those knuckleheads would go outside in any temperature. I did add a heat lamp when it was -20 to -40F, I bought the Prima heat Lamp, Totally safe, even if it falls, I bought the Cozy panel, piece of CRAP, stopped working after only 3 months.

In the past I've used an oil radiator similar to the one in the link below. Just make sure to prop it up onto something (I used a block of wood) so it is not touching any shavings. All sides should also be clear of touching anything inside the coop. This kept my coop 10 degrees warmer than outside. When it's -30, that's better than nothing.
