I just got one of these today and put 5 day old chicks in there and they seem to be doing fine. I can tell it’s warmer under there, and the chicks like have been using it after I showed them where it was. The fire hazard from the heat lamp didn’t seem worth the risk and the chicken man at my feed store said he thought they were great for brooders.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I’ve been going back and forth on it. Can you please keep me updated on how it’s going with the chicks? I won’t be receiving my baby chicks until March 12th so I have time.

Lots of people use plates.
Just make sure you get one bigger than the manufacturer suggests for number of chicks.
The population numbers for plates is as bad(overestimated) as it is for those cute little dollhouse coops.

I have been using my heat plates for over a year with hundreds of happy peeps. I love them! Way more natural than using heat lamps because the chicks actually get to sleep at night when it's dark and you don't have the fire hazard of a heat lamp.

Get the one with the pointed roof on top. Chicks get on top and poop all over the flat top. I covered it daily with newspaper, paper towels or wax paper. Then I got another with the protective lid, so much better.
But the top expands the space they can use to get warm.
I just put a piece of cardboard on top and toss it when too soiled.
