My Forever Pet



There's something missing in my home,
I feel it day and night,
I know it will take time and strength
Before things feel quite right.

But just for now, I need to mourn,
My heart -- it needs to mend.
Though some may say it's 'just a pet'
I know I've lost a friend

You've brought such laughter in my home,
and richness to my days....
A constant friend through joy and loss,
With gentle loving ways.

Companion, pal, and confidant,
A friend I won't forget,
You'll live for always in my heart,

~Moonlight Feathers~
A feather blows in the midnight breeze
And the tears pour down my face
How could this have happened?
How are you no longer in this place?

You were just here-
My Sunshine dear.
You were taken so fast
For it seems just moment or two ago.
That you weren't even near your last.

The time we had was short
Too brief, compared to mortal years
But my little ball of sun
Brightened my life and obliterated my tears.

My hand reaches down to pet your head
Over the roosting bar
My finger grope and flail,
But to no avail
But how can my morning Sun be dead?

My beloved friend
That's what you were
No matter other's viewpoint.
For your shining feathers were to me-
As their dog's fur.

My fingers dance along the box
Where you nested most
I pluck a feather from its depths
And hold it up to the moon's streaming light
It shimmers like a golden moth-
An everlasting ghost.

Candice makes a purring trill
Her eyes half-closed with sleep
Could this precious one
Perhaps live still-
But never quite in your place?

For my Sun will be forever here
Within this moonlit coop
Among the friends and flock she's known
For the fleeting years.
A ray of eternal sun shines in my heart-
An beam of molten moonlight that sets my sobs at ease-
For you, my Sun, will be forever near
As a feather blown by the midnight breeze.

I wrote a reeeeeaaaallly sad one for the first chicken I ever lost when I was 8 and I still can't even bear to post it.
