Hector's World: Adventures and Mayhem at Mountain View Poultry (or Sequel to The Evolution of Atlas

Pics
I love waking up in the morning to an incubator full of chicks. Probably a lot harder to check on with Mama
Definitely harder to check on mama. Another Brahma egg has pipped, another from Betsy, so three of each breed have pipped now. I may just go read my Kindle in a bit and check on them in a few hours. The brooder is ready to go, all warmed up with food and water.

Hector is a daddy of six new babies today. All six of Jill's eggs hatched. I see two pretty for-sure pullets, will reserve final judgement until everyone is fluffy. Brahmas are still working on coming out of those eggs, a few have hatched. I think there is a total of ten chicks so far, but a few Brahmas are definitely not pipped at all.

My cat brought a mouse up in front of the coops to play with before he ate it. Hector came trotting over with his girls and was giving the cat the side-eye. Then, he swooped in, grabbed the mouse, beat it and broke its back and gave it to his hens. Thief! Atlas did that to Finn once, too, but the mouse was already stone cold dead.

I was ticked off at Hector this morning before he made me laugh at his thieving ways. I let them out and was still in the back of the barn doing stuff when he came tearing down the aisle and ran up to me in a threatening manner. I kicked his butt with a twisted rod we have in there and ran him out of the barn yelling at him, went back to what I was doing. And then, he came back and did it again. What is up with that idiot?? He is on probation again. If he crosses the line, I have sons of his just waiting to take his place.

Oh, Hector and Jill's kids with the Brahmas today, 2 weeks, 2 days old:
