HEEELLPP!! Emergency!!

No he is pooping a pile of poop. Once we washed the poop off of him he was pooping normally. But I just checked him 2 min ago, and he had like 30 baby maggots around his vent hole. How can I put him down. Is it possible to put him down without taking him to the vet? A pellet gun may hurt too much.

P.S. I went to tractor supply, and I could not find any antibiotics, just electrolytes and probiotics. Could antibiotics help at this point?

There is so little chance that I wouldn't risk putting him through more pain. You can cull him by using an axe, sharp scissors, the cone method, a wringer if you have one, or the rake method. Just look any up that you are interested in, there are many ways to do it at home. Also, DO NOT eat the rooster after you cull him or feed him to any other animals, dogs, cats, etc. please keep us posted, you are doing the right thing.

I would use the Mathis they use to kill chicks. Peroxide and baking soda in a sealed container. They say it's like falling asleep. I personally just wring them, grab them by the neck, and swing in circles really fast. I have only used it on sick broilers and could never do it in egg laying chickens and wouldn't expect you too.

I am trying to use a saline solution that I found on this website as a final hoorah. How do you inject the baking soda and peroxide? Is cull kill? What is a sick broiler?

Here is the solution
that I found. Its hard to see, but it is 1/4 tsp salt to 1/2 gallon of water. I just made a 4 gallon mixture.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear.

you put the chicken in a sealed container with peroxide and baking soda and just wait. Cull does mean to kill and a broiler is a meat chicken.
If I was in the same situation I would wait a week though. I don't know if it would do any good, but I think I would do that.

Sorry to butt in on the thread . I have no experience with this yet and can't offer any insight on the subject BUT I have read lots of folks are going thru this right now. This thread is very old so many will not see it. Is there any way u could start a new thread under the emergency/diseases topic? I'm certain you will get lots of good advice and maybe even save your roo. Good luck and best wishes :hugs

Yes, if the problem was just the maggots I would feel better about his chances of survival. However, while cleaning him today I noticed that his leg is hurt. It felt stiff, and was not able to be moved around as much as the other leg while we were picking him up. See how is left leg is straight out, but his right leg is bent and moving around? Before while he was limping, it was on his left leg. I don't know how long this will last, or how long it will take for him to heal.

About the peroxide method. If I need to, I should just put him in a blue rubber maid container with a lid, put a bowl filled with peroxide and baking soda mixed together, and wait a couple hours? Then he will be dead? Painless? Like falling asleep?
