heirloom tomatoes

My favorite is Cherokee Purple. I can't remember the place we ordered them from but you can buy seeds and started plants at lots of places.

Our favorites from our own heirloom tomato adventures are:

Aunt Ruby's German Green

Cherokee Purple

Black Krim

This year we're going to to 15 varieties, the 3 above being repeats. I haven't finalized the list but going to do Brandywine, Old German, Hillbilly, Opalka, German Strawberry, Caspian Pink, Pineapple, Amish Paste, and Arkansas Traveller plus a few more that haven't been decided on for sure.

my grandfather grew the beefsteaks to ENORMOUS sizes. he also had the cherokee purples. i like the ones that are not so acidic, but most places here are selling the early girls and the regular stuff... atleast its good to know lots of others appreciate the 'ole maters too.

Black Krims (so far) are my favorite choice for a slicer/eat off the vine 'mater. I was VERY happy with the productivity of my Brandywine's which produced from about June till frost which is November here! I remember them slowing down/stopping in the heat of summer(most of the big tomatoes won't produce when nights are above about 70 degrees or so), but the vines just kept right on going and produced a big second crop in the fall.

I ordered from Baker Creek and I am trying some new seed this year. I am in USDA Zone 8a, by the way.

I agree on baker's creek... rareseeds.com the catalog is an amazing thing.

Sent out 10 copies of the tomato file so far, enjoy them.

If you have it at your local library, or really love tomatoes, the book 100 heirloom tomatoes for the american gardener , Dr. Carolyn Male is an amazing referance on heirlooms. Amazon often has copies for about $15.
