Helllllpppp... BCM eggs.

If you open a window to add the dish/sponge for better humidity, you'll disturb the overall condition less. There won't be the giant sucking outflow of air such as when you open the whole top.

I had poor hatch rates, too, every time I hatched these- like 25% when they were shipped. Many just didn't appear fertile, so who knows- but that rate was consistent with differing sources from all over the country.

They are not as easy to get from day 1 to a hatch, though, so don't worry yourself sick...it is just the way it is. Don't help- that's the killer.

Good luck!

Anything.........bueller, bueller???

what's goin on?

Good luck! My BCM eggs from Ruth were my best hatch ever. Out of 12 eggs I had 8 hatch. I dont get this hatch rate even with my own eggs. So for me, BCM's have been very easy to hatch. I keep my humidity in the 65% range from days 1-18 and then up it to 70% for the remaining days.
I live in the Desert, at high elevation... so what works for me may not work for you.

Ok I followed your post and now have temp at 102 and humid at 72 and it has been for three hours. I just looked and now have the makings of a pip small triangle crack on one of the eggs was not there 5 hours ago. Thanks all. will update soon. This is a test run I have 6 eggs in there now I am getting 12 more BCM tomorow to start wed.

Ok guy's you've been great so far. I have one more question should it take 12 going on thirteen hours to go from pip to zip and out of the egg. Chick in question zipped about 12-13 hrs ago and has been trying to get out of the shell ever since there is still membrane attached in three places that I can see. The chick seems to be still strong going at it. Just worried my first one.

The longest on Barred Rocks that I have had on a hatch is 24 hours from pip to zip and hatched.

So at 23 hours, I would go in after it before it stops making noise and trying to get out. There are directions on the web on how to help them out.

It's controversial, though, because you are then introducing negative genetics into your flock. Chicks of this bird will then have a weakness that you won't want.

Also, we cluck at them through the incubator trying to help encourage them out. And it works. But then I have kids who have time for that.

Yes, Yes ,Yes, As I tell my self and everyone we sell our bcm eggs to, patience and don't fiddle with them to much. I always want to mess with thermostat, and humidity and relocate eggs to a "more favorable" part of the incubator. I want to wrap each one up in bits of wet bathclothes...I want to be the Mother Hen

I'm so fascinated with hatching and the birthing process. How just how can this miracle occur!!!!! This transformation from an egg to this incredible vibrant living being....Yes, I'm a hatchaholic.

If I can digress with discussing this with a minister once, he said to me, well it's like the 3 in one process in faith, We have yolk, white and shell and then the conversion process into a new being when faith intervenes. No, I'm not calling my babies Christian chicks (smile)...I don't want to turn this into a sermon and get in trouble with BYC rules, but I think of his comments often whenever new chicks are born. Enjoy those babies!!!!

Have a great and blessed day.
