Hi, my name is Liz, and I am hoping to eventually start my own flock. I've dreamed of having chickens for well over a decade. I lived on a cattle ranch for almost 10 years, however, my ex-husband refused to allow any livestock other than cattle, so those dreams were dashed at that time. I've since remarried, and moved over 1000 miles away, from SE Missouri, to Hialeah, FL, where my new husband would LOVE to have fresh eggs and a small flock. Funny it took moving from a farm to the city before I could even consider it, LOL! Unfortunately, the ordinances don't allow chickens. I have a feeling that Santeria may have caused a lot of the issues with the regulations, however. But, you wouldn't know that they are outlawed by the number of chickens you see scratching around, so I'm willing to take a chance with a small flock of three to four hens, and giving eggs to the neighbors if we have extra. In any case, as I was slowly making plans for a coop, I found this site and was immensely pleased with the amount of information that can be obtained here. I'm looking forward to asking questions, learning, and eventually being able to contribute with my own knowledge. Thanks so much!!! Oh, and if there are any people from south Florida willing to give a shout-out, I'd much appreciate it!

Hello and welcome to BYC

Have a look at the Laws & Ordinances section, who knows there may be someone from your area fighting for the right to keep hens! Otherwise look in the Where am I, Where are You section for people from your area. Good luck and enjoy your chickens, when you get some.

Thank you, sumi. Yes, I've looked there, and no we do not live in an agriculture area, unfortunately, which is the only area that allows livestock, of which fowl is mentioned. Like I said, I think santeria has cast an unfortunate light on keeping chickens within the city limits, but I do hope the law enforcement will turn a blind eye, because like I said, I see chickens scratching around in yards all over the city. Lucky for us, our yard is quite private, and we have an unused garage that could possibly be converted into quite a roomy and well-ventilated coop if need be.

from Australia! We're glad to have you join us.

You can ask your local council about how many chickens you are permitted to keep.
Go to the Where am I? Where are you? section if you want to get in touch with South Florida chicken keepers.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions on the forum!
Enjoy the site and good luck!

Thank you for welcoming me from way down under. Now there is a country I would LOVE to visit. I've already posted under the Florida section of Where am I? Where are you?, so hopefully I'll be able to get in touch with a few peeps (no pun intended, of course, hehehehe) there. Hmmmmm.... after looking at this site, I see there is also a lot of activity on FaceBook as well. I deactivated my account to take a break from it for a bit, but it looks as though I may have to reactivate it!
