Hello everyone.

We raised a couple ducks last year from ducklings and let them out into a pond on a property of a friend of the family and they did great! in fact they took over the flock of ducks that was living in the pond. So proud of my little quacking conquerors.

When we got a new house that has a pond on it, we decided to raise 2 little ducklings for it. so wanted to look for a community where there may be some more experienced duck owners that i could draw some knowledge from.

right now we have 2 just turning adult ducks. My 2 i had last year were a black duck, and an Indian runner duck. my 2 this year... they seem to be of the same breed, but I honestly don't know what breed they are. they lost their yellow baby feathers and grew in the same color yellow adult feathers. they look almost like Pekin ducks but not as big.

They are so affectionate. They love to be pet and to be held. when they were small they would always want to sit on my shoulders or head. they still do... but that's a lot less easy to balance now. they get along great with my dogs and cats and love to snuggle up to and harass one of my dogs in particular. She is protective of them too so it's a nice friendship.

Came across this place randomly and everyone seemed cool in the threads i read so looking forward to getting to know you all

When you released the ducks in your friends pond, what kind of structure or housing did they have set up?

Are you planning on having any sort of coop or housing for your new ducks? I ask because I am also new to ducks and have 9 Rouen ducks that are two weeks old. I have a half acre pond, but I am not sure how I can protect them from predators but still allow them to free range on the pond. I welcome learning from others on how to protect these guys!

Friend’s pond is open and sort of “in the wild.” They live in the country on a huge piece of land and the pond is in the middle. They adapted well to it. They still remember me but they are wild ducks now and seem happy ruling their flock

We just got a coop and I am going to put it together this weekend. We have an acre lot and about 1/4 acre is the pond. It’s not that deep but had some pond loaches and frogs living in it. So it’s a healthy little ecosystem

I’m nervous about transitioning these guys outside. They hate being outside in the yard and get nervous if they peep over their bin and can’t see me. So will be a rough few days til they are used to it I’m sure

I was worried about predators too as I haven’t seen, but have heard coyotes out in the distance. Our yard is fenced in on all sides and the coop I got has a caged in area out front and a door to the sleeping area that can be closed so it’s about as safe as we can make it for them. We are going to put the coop just out the back door. That way if something happen and a coyote or something tries to get in they aren’t too far away.
