Hello All! New member checking in from White House, TN - "newbie" to raising a backyard flock

Hello All! I've been checking BYC since acquiring day-old chicks (2 brown red Ameraucanas & 2 white Silkies) and 2 Pekin ducklings one week before Easter this year as a 4-H project for my daughter. Sadly one Silkie (possibly a 'Roo) didn't make it but all the rest have grown up and we've been awaiting our "First Egg" for awhile now. All the chicks are hens and the ducks turned out to be a hen and a drake.
TODAY WAS THE DAY!!! I had just finally decided to officially join BYC when my daughter came up from the coop and yard pen with a big "Hurray! We've got our first egg!"
What I'm NOT sure however, is who laid it? I was just down to the coop to put them in for the evening and had a SECOND Egg! Yay! I know they aren't the Ameraucanas, because they're white. My problem is that they are a bit small for Pekin duck eggs and I suspect too large for a Silkie - it's about the size of a store-bought large. Do ducks start with smaller eggs that increase in size as they lay more? I've read (here at BYC) that this might happens when the pullets finally decide to lay (whenever that might be). Just wondered if anyone can share about the ducks. My DD Grandmother always had Pekins around her home so I'm familiar with the size her nesting hens would lay and they were about double these two.

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your first egg :celebrate It is so exciting when you find that first one, really is like finding go,d and I'm sure your daughter was delighted to have found it!! I'm afraid I'm not a duck person so can't help on their eggs but I'm sure if you ask in the duck section the duck keepers there will be able to help you. Quick question, I just bought a home in White House and was told that our neighborhood didn't allow chickens. First, how can I find out if this is true? Secondly, are there ways around this? My backyard is mostly wooded and we are a homeschool family. Thanks for any help that you can offer.

If you live in a subdivision with a homeowners association the you might be out of luck. if your land has restrictions it should be on the deed you just have to read .once had land south of Nashville with pigs not allowed contact the register of deeds in your county and check there if it is not on the deed .they may have to subdivision layout with restrictions if it is not on the deed and the subdivision does not have restrictions then they can't stop you . however check all the paper work including city codes . good luck with that . one more thing codes administration for city codes a call should do it .

I know you've just thanked everyone for their welcomes, but let me just squeeze this last one in. congrats on the eggs, but as Yorkshire coop suggested, maybe making a post their with a photo showing something for comparison to help with estimating egg size would help.
