Hi everyone. I have got 4 chickens, Babs, Ginger, Penny and Flo. They are all Rhode Island Reds. Ginger has been laying since the day I got them home.

Now I have another one laying (not sure which) but, It was a lot smaller than the other one and the shell was darker too. So I boiled it up with the other egg and opened it, but the yolk was really orange. Even maybe a little red!?!?

Anyway...I was just wondering if they are ok to eat still?

Many thanks

WELCOME!!!

Those beautiful orangy yolks are why we keep backyard chickens! Those yolks are a sign that the chickens are getting a good variety in their diet and they are extra Yummy!!

Now, a blood spot in an egg would be a small bloody spot in an otherwise normal yolk. Still not a problem except cosmetic (I usually pick them out...)

You must have very happy hens if you are getting really dark yolks!
