Hello all. Picking up chicks in one week!

So, we have decided to hold off for a month or so. We will look get them at the end of March. Still lots of snow on the ground and I don't want these guys to be 4 weeks old and find that i still cant build the coop. Being responsible is no fun......

No fun, but better in the end. Something you may want to consider, is to build a brooder box with a light and put it in the garage if that's an option for you. We currently have a mama rabbit and her 5 babies in a brooder box. (Negative temps is not a good time to have babies-but accidents happen...)

Also, if you are looking to get specific breeds, you need to act now because they go fast-unfortunately. Just things to consider

Hi All

I have spent a lot of time on this site over the past 6 months gathering information. Very thankful for all the information that is available to me. My wife and I and our 12 year old twin girls are doing the chicken thing for the first time. We are picking up 10 chicks next Tuesday. Food and accessories and brooder are ready to go. I will begin building the coop (which has been built and rebuilt in my head several times over) once all of this snow in Northern Massachusetts goes away.

Anyway, thanks for all of the valuable information on this site that all of you have contributed to. If there is anyone on here from my general area (Haverhill, MA) that would be open to chatting and answering questions, that would be great! Feel free to message me or post in here if you would be willing to have some questions bounced off of you if they come up.

Thanks for the great forum
Jak

hey jwb

so, after thinking more about it last night, we are going to go ahead with the original plan and pick them up on march 10th. i have adjusted my coop plan so that it utilizes a section of my shed. my shed is quite large (12x16) so i think this will be the quickest and cheapest option. i will then just need to build a run off of the shed for them. but, utilizing the shed will save some money and i can get that done in a day probably. it will also make cleaning easier as i will be able to stand up to do the cleaning. i also tend to think it will be warmer overall than a coop in our cold and snowy winters.

just called Agway to verify that they got their shipment of chicks and was told it has been postponed due to cold until thurs or fri. weather for yesterday and today is actually milder than what is forecasted for thurs or friday, so im a bit confused. but, either way, my kids (and I) are going to be disappointed we are not getting the chicks tonight.....

today may be the day! need to call agway in a few hours to see if they received the chicks. one of my daughters cried for hours on tuesday when we broke the news that we were not picking up chicks. hoping we dont have to do that again today.
