I have a door on the side I can get in. I use pine shavings on the floor of the coop. My coop floor is constructed of steel tubing spaced 3 inches apart with plywood screwed to it. It is 6 inches above the ground. I also buried the base in the ground 6 inches.Hello, Aaron, and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
It can take several weeks for them to settle in.
Your run is not predator proof and isn't large enough for 8 RSL. You might want to consider correcting that. What are your coop dimensions? Chickens need 4 sq ft of coop space per bird not including nest box area. They require 12 sq ft per bird in the run. More is better. You will also need litter in the room as the poop load is going to build up in there and cause issues. How do you get in there to clean it out?
Also I have a fenced in yard approx 30ftx100ft I am planning on letting the chickens runI have a door on the side I can get in. I use pine shavings on the floor of the coop. Hi Aaron, so glad to have you! Chickens are wonderful therapy! I'm sure you will enjoy yours and be blessed by them. BYC will certainly shorten the learning curve for you, I know it has for me. Everyone has their own way of doing things and you will find what works for you, but certainly some ways work better than others and it's good to learn from the experiences of others. One can often save some difficulty that way. I keep feed available 24/7 although they don't eat at night. I keep the feeder in the hen house (coop) all the time to protect it from weather and varmints, and also so they can help themselves as soon as they wake up as I am not as early a riser as they are!
