    Hi everyone,

I just joined the forum becuase my wife and I decided to get chickens. At this time we do not have any. We are picking up a coop this Tuesday and will probably build our own run. I only want 5-7 chickens. We haven't picked a breed yet but are looking for non-flying quiet birds. Would like to get a silkie for the kids though. I have a lot of hobbies (photography, 3D printing, motorcycles, etc.). I live in Md and have a Bernese mountain dog, and I work in IT.

Hello and welcome to BYC. Apparently silkies can be very friendly and calm but their egg production is not massive and their desire to hatch chicks is strong.
@Teila has some great links on breed choice

More generally, here's a good link where you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Glad you're here with us at BYC!
Silkies are a wonderful docile breed, though they do tend to go broody. Sillies make excellent mothers, even sitting on and raising chicks from other breeds.
You will enjoy the chicken experience! There are many wonderful breeds to choose from.
Enjoy your time here! If you ever have questions just ask!
