I think at least hens have an excuss ,I noticed within a couple of days chicks can fly well enough to get off the ground fast ,whereas the first couple of days they are fairly helpless .So maybe thats why they are programmed to abandon nests after most chicks hatch ,a chick that cant fly or is still hatching would be a danger if a predator found the nest slowing down the rest and would probably be killed and eaten by it anyway .The hens are being brilliant mums in other respects so I couldnt understand why they would be so cruel,my only thoughts are that its a sacrifice of one for the good of the restHope the chick will continue to do well. After reading newspaper stories of new mothers abusing their baby or worse - guess it shouldn't be a shock that hens sometimes do the same.
How sad.
