Hello,

I just joined BYC. This is my first time raising chicks. I have a Red Star, a Speckled Sussex and 2 Easter Egger bantams. I also have a raised organic garden so I jokingly deemed myself an urban micro farmer. My "farm" is named after my sweet, beautiful Lula girl,an English Setter who really wants to eat the chicks. I'm hoping things will change once they are full grown as she is a chicken herself. I have a public Instagram account named lulabellfarm documenting my adventure in backyard farming.

Can't wait to learn more about being a mother hen,

I am kinda the same as you, I have a dog that wants to eat my chickens and a organic garden! What do you grow? (I don't know what to grow next, I got another planter box)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Most dogs see all chicks and chickens as dinner. So she will probably not change her attitude. So be very careful with your dog around the chickens. Lots of threads in the emergency section on how my dog ate my chickens.

I'm growing broccoli ( got too hot so gave it to the chicks roots and all) tomatoes, cukes, peppers, green beans, zucchini , squash and various herbs. Peppers and cukes not doing great even though I researched companion planting. This is my first time so experimenting with what works best. I do want to build a cold frame and grow lettuce and greens this winter. What about you?
 
Thanks yes I have to do supervised free ranging and block her dog door with the cover and a heavy box. I tried having her on a leash while the pecked around and her whole body shook and was drooling. Not a great sign. Oh and she ate part of the coop the first day they went in to visit.

The only thing we currently have growing in our garden is tomatoes, onions, jalapeno peppers, and lots of different herbs. Good luck with your garden and your winter cold frame.

I believe I got an owl that grew into a pigeon and a crow :lol:
My friend told me to get the red star because they are reliable layers which is good since I got 2 bantams. I was more worried about them having enough space once full grown. My coop says it can hold 6 but not humanely. Once I see how big they get I would like to add one more star. My Sussex is currently the same size as the bantams and still doesn't have tail feathers. Maybe she'll be a late bloomer or the runt.

I pulled up my onions since I read chickens can't eat them and their favorite activity is rooting in the garden??? Don't know if it was necessary or not. I do have mint, basil, thyme, parsley, and lavender so I'm hoping to have some nice smelling nesting boxes in a few months when their ready to lay.
