Hello All! My name is Kayce and my family of 4 lives in Louisiana. We recently moved onto an acre of land, which gives us plenty of space for whatever we could dream up.
A friend decided he was tired of hearing me talk about getting chickens so one week ago he bought me 6 and forced my hand. Now i am starting off on what i hope to be a very fun and very delicious journey.
My ultimate goal is to have a hog, a cow and some chickens for eating purposes. But i am new to "wild" animals and think chicks were the place to start. I have so much to learn and cant wait to "meet" you all.

Also, if anyone knows the breed of the chicks above id appreciate knowing. All i know is they are all SUPPOSED to be female, they are SUPPOSED to lay brown eggs and i THINK the word red is in the name. Not much to go on but you all are experts ;)

Welcome to BYC!!!
Looks like Rhode Island Reds there, and they cannot be fully one hundred percent females so don't be upset if a rooster turns up! You may want to keep him, roosters are awesome to have around and I can give you some handling tips.
I was told about the likelihood of a rooster or two popping up as i buy chicks, but hadn't planned on keeping any. Any pros and cons you could give?

Hello Kayce and welcome to BYC!

Roosters are good if you plan to breed and for protection of the hens.
I plan on experimenting with different breeds before i even consider the possibility of breeding. Assuming i only keep one rooster for protection purposes, what would be the noise factor i should expect? Each of my neighbors and myself are all sitting on our own acre of land, would that be plenty of space to not be completely hated by them?

Hi and welcome, cute babies
would that be plenty of space to not be completely hated by them?
I think you need to speak to them. I could care less if somebody nearby got a rooster (I live in the city and they aren't permitted in my area) because I wake up early and the sound of wildlife around and about does not annoy me and my house is like the cone of silence - for some reason noise from outside doesn't really penetrate to the inside.
If I had a little baby and was up half the night and finally got to sleep at "cock-a-doodle-doo" time AND I could hear it AND it would wake me up, I'd feel very differently. I'd speak to them, if you get one, ask them whether it's bothering them and be prepared to take steps to keep it in the dark until later in the morning or to rehome it if it's a problem.

For starters, the roosters crow at various times during the day -- not just in the morning like I always thought. I have 3. Sometimes one crows, sometimes they all crow. I barely notice if I'm n the house.

I think that with an acre of land it's not likely that the crowing should bother the neighbors, but there's always that one neighbor.... Only one way to find out and that is to wait until it happens.
