Just a small introduction, new to the chicken world. So chickens is something I've been wanting to do for about a year now. Because of this or that it just hadn't gotten done. 4 weeks ago my 6yr old (with grandma & grandpa, lol) shows up with 8 little chicks from TSC. All I know is he picked 2 chicks each from 4 different types. Don't know the breeds/sex yet but we have 2 blacks, 2 light browns, 2 black & whites & 2 brown & whites. I stumbled upon this forum researching the in's & out's of chickens and am glad I did. Lots of good info here and looking forward to learn as much as I can as we venture into the chicken world. We love to garden so chickens should fit in perfectly with our lifestyle. Looking to keep hens for egg production and will have to relocate the roosters. Ideally, looking to keep no more than 5 hens. Gonna wait another couple weeks before I post an identification thread, but here are a few pics of our flock.

I was pretty sure we have at least 2 roosters and the rest were hens. Now I am doubting myself and think there may be a few more roosters.

Welcome! My best guess is that the solid buff (light brown) colored ones could be Buff Orpingtons. Super sweet friendly breed so if that is what they are, you will be very pleased, I am sure. Not sure about the rest. I only see one pick of black one and it appears to have some brown in the chest so might be Black Star??? which is essentially a cross breed whose sex can be determined by down at hatch. Do you recall if the black ones had spots on their heads?

The Black Sex Link - Black Star -
Female is a completely black chick.
Males are black with a white spot on the top of their heads.

The brown and white might be Red Star
Once again, do you remember their down color?
The Red Sex Link - Red Star, Golden Comets, ISA Browns, Cinnamon Queens -
Females hatch out a buff or red.
Males hatch out white.

I'm super curious about the black and white ones. I don't know what they are. What did they look like with their down?

In your first photo, the far left black and white looks like a pullet to me.
Can't see enough of the other 3 to have an opinion.
2nd photo... I'm tempted to say both pullets.
3rd photo... I can't say, maybe pullet. Would love to see close up of comb and wattle from side view.
4th photo... one buff/brown and white in fore front looks pullet.
5th photo... I can only see face of two of these... black and white on far left and buff/white on the right. Both look pullet to me.

Some have bigger combs than others but I don't see any red in any of them. At this moment, I don't see any that scream rooster to me. Are they 4 weeks old? That is young for sexing, especially from a photo. Were they completely covered in fuzzy down when you got them or had they already started to feather?

Thanks everyone for all the warm welcomes and great info!

I agree with the light brown ones being Buff Orphingtons, at least from what I gathered from pictures on other threads and around the net. The two we have are both different.

This one has always had smaller wings, a smaller tail that curls in, smaller crest and larger feet than the other one.

This one is larger and has longer wings, longer tail feathers as well as a larger crest.

Because they are different I just figured one was a rooster. Neither of the two show signs of a red on the crest. Here they are together

The black ones were both all black when we got them.

Both now have brown coming through and like the Buff's one has longer tail feathers while the other has short feathers that curl in. Both have small crusts with no sign of red.

The Brown & White ones were light brown as chicks with a lighter color of wing. The red color started coming out after a couple weeks. Not as yellow as the Buffs were as chicks.

As per the Black & White, here is another chick pic.

Kids brought them home March 28, I'm guessing they weren't more than a couple days old. Thanks again for all the great info, very much appreciated!
