Hi Everyone,
Just signed up and decided to introduce myself first then bounce around the website.
Thanks for this handy template to make introductions easier :)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens off and on for about 30 years.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have about 30 chickens

(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island Reds, Andalusia (?), Black Maran, Buff Orpington, white Leghorn and a couple more that I can't think of right now

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Love hearing the rooster crow in the morning. Then of course the fresh eggs are great.
Generally like taking care of them

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, crocheting, reading

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I live with my daughter and her family on four acres in the Sierra foothills - California. We all love animals and have quite a variety. Besides the chickens, we have goats, a donkey (to guard the goats), quail, peacocks, guinea fowl, an emu, four dogs, six cats, various types of turtles/tortoises. We are very interested in learning more about growing our own animal feed. Have been checking out fodder systems. Always on the look out for new ideas we can implement on our property.
I am a bookkeeper right now but soon to retire

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D Saw a post on Pinterest about growing fodder for chickens so followed it here

Hi everyone! Totally new to backyard chickens. My granddaughter has wanted them for about 3 years, but we just never got any. Decided that this would be the year and one adopts us. She must have been a free range chicken that wandered into our yard about 2 months ago. She'd disappear for a while, then show back up. Husband decided to clean up a woodpile that we've have for about 6 years or so, a few days later his sister and her husband noticed a chicken nesting in the woodpile!! She had laid 14 eggs. We did end up moving her one night since we were supposed to get a pretty bad thunderstorm. Imagine my surprise when yesterday morning the eggs started hatching. Of the 14 eggs 11 have hatched into totally adorable chicks. Not sure if the other 3 will hatch or not. She doesn't seem to be sitting on them any longer as she's taking care of the chicks.
