I am new to chickens. Growing up, I was always scared to death of my Daddy’s chickens. I just thought they looked like they wanted to peck my eyes out. Lol But my kids were interested in getting some chickens and so was my husband. So I looked into docile friendly breeds. Lol
I got my first newly hatched chicks from a local poultry farm about a year and a half ago. I got a few standard Cochins, Wyandotte’s, and silkies. They were amazing! The silkie wasn’t as overly friendly as I wish she was. She’s a bit skiddish. But she’s not aggressive, and that’s the main thing.
I realized really quickly that predators can get through the tiniest of holes. I thought I did a bang up job on my coop. I buried the wire around the edge so nothing could dig in, but I forgot or missed a small gap towards the ceiling of the coop. I lost 2 chickens. I felt terrible! So I fixed that issue. The chickens got friendlier and definitely have their own individual personalities! I have also since then gotten two turkeys, I absolutely love my turkeys. I now have a bantam frizzle Cochin and a naked neck.
I recently bought some hatching eggs. I am dying for some “showgirls!” How cute are those? They should hatch out Monday, give or take. I’ve read many posts on here about candling, temp and humidity levels, placement of eggs once you receive shipped eggs etc. I’m hoping for at least a few. I also have some lavender Orpingtons and porcelain Orpingtons and several blue partridge brahma chicks under the heat lamps in the brooders!

Welcome to BYC!! Great introduction! I was deathly afraid of chickens myself for the longest time because of a bad experience with a crazed rooster! Now having my own GIRLS has been the best experience for the whole family! We won't be having roosters though... 😂
Thanks for joining!!
