Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow I pick up my first 3 quails, two hens and a cock, named Patsy, Dolly and Kenny. I‘m really looking forward to it, but need to ask some really silly questions? I’ve researched and everything says they need grit or oyster shell available to help digestion? Do I mix it with their pellets or does it go in a separate dish?

Will it be ok if they go in their outside run during the day and then I bring them into the house at night to keep them safe in an inside enclosure?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to BYC! So excited you joined! :wee

You should offer grit to your chickens so that they can digest their food properly. Offer it free-choice in a separate dish. As for the oyster shell, chickens need it because it is high in calcium. The oyster shell helps make eggshells and strengthens bones. This should also be offered in a separate dish.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

What species of quail are you getting? It matters because every species has a different male to female ratio.

Quail are so much fun to keep, such big personality in a tiny package!

Definitely offer the hens crushed oyster shell on the side so that the male isn't forced to eat it. If you have a VERY safe run to keep them in during the day, it's fine that you leave them outside and bring them in at night. Make SURE nothing can dig under, climb over or through. Everything eats quail!

Good luck and welcome aboard!
