Hello BYC comminty. My name is Tracy and I am new to BYC (officially). I have been using BYC since April when I got 8 chicks for my birthday. Unfortunatley, those chicks were killed by a neighbors dog.
I was sooooo upset. But I shortly replace them with new chicks from a local breeder. I currently have 10 younger chicken: 2 Delaware (roo/hen), 4 barred rocks (hens), 4 RIR (roos/1hen). They live seperately from 4 RIR 1 1/2 year old hens and 1 buff orp roo that I rescued. They free range together in the afternoons and evening together. I recently bought an Easter Egger hen. I had 3 Buff Orps that I gave my mom for her birthday. My dad, my sister, my son and I build her a coop and everything!! She loves it and is now addicted to chickens just like me!!
I love my chickens, and they are now my favorite past time. I quite my full-time job in May to stay home with my son, and I am so grateful and so satisfied with my new life-style. I hang-out all my clothes to dry, herd chickens, collets a few eggs, and had a very productive spring/summer garden.
I am looking forward to my younger chickens to start laying in the next month or so!! But I will probably be saying goodbye to a few roos.
I live outside of a small town in Eastern NC with my son and husband. All the kids in our little neighborhood help out with our chickens and our rabbit (Izzy). I am hoping to take my chicken enthusiasum to South Africa (where we have an established ministry) as an income generating project for orphans and vulnerable children!!
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to offer their advice and experiences. It is soooo helpful!
Looking forward to many chicken filled days ahead,
Tracy
