I apologize for my lack of knowledge when it comes to these little ladies. My wife grew up on a farm and me in the city. This last summer we moved to the country and I built my wife a chicken coop and what I thought was a secure fence enclosure. We had 5 grown ladies and one rooster and I am unaware of their breed.(I ordered a book to catch me up) Anyway our dog Ace which is a black Chua attacked the rooster and he didn't make it. This wasn't any rooster it was one her grandma had given her and she was devastated. I take full responsibility for the accident I left the chicken pen open while I was going in and out. Since then I have fortified the enclosure and put spring loaded hinges on the gate. I would like to get her a new rooster but don't were to go or what kind to get. I'm reaching out to the pro's to help educate me. I would like to get one that is grown if possible. We live outside Columbia SC. I know I can't replace it but told her I would do my best. Thanks in advance!

Welcome! Sorry to hear about your rooster. Many people can't keep roosters per laws in city limits, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one. You should check here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16182/animals-in-need-of-free-re-homing as well as craigslist for your area. As to the kind of rooster, that's up to you! Research, explore options, and I'm sure you and your wife will find the perfect one. Good luck!

Hello :frow Welcome to BYC and Happy Holidays! Sorry about your rooster, good luck in your search for a new one. X2 the suggestions above, and you might want to check the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade forum for older birds, there are often roosters available on there.

Thank you all for your warm welcomes! I was a little afraid whenever I would ask a question on a car forum some people make you feel well not that good. All your help and links are paying off. I was able to get in contact with a nice lady who has a rooster that is close to us so I hope that turns out well. I look forward to posting questions and learning new things. Thanks again everyone!!
