Ann With A Plan
Songster
Hi,
Pinterest brought me here awhile back when I saw someone's thread about how they grow their fodder. I included a picture of the trays I found at a thrift store that'll be perfect for mine (I just have to line them with toile fabric).
I'm in North Carolina. My daughter had chickens several years ago and then recently asked me to get some and keep them here. We found a moveable coop and the chicks stayed with her until they were big enough to come here. I liked that the sides go up and down to keep rain and sun out when needed.
I had them staying in a smaller cage at first, to keep them safer, as I didn't like that the coop only had chicken wire on it. So I covered almost every inch with hardware cloth as well. It came with a watering system on the side with nipples at the bottom, but they can't reach it yet. I did put a box there and several of them found the nipples. I put branches in there and several large pvc pipes, which they liked sitting on. I was going to take them out after I found them roosting on the middle bar the other evening, but when I started messing with the branches the chicks hopped on them haha. So I guess they'll stay until I can rig some more sturdy ones up. They also really liked their dust bath (dirt and D.E. in a turkey tin).
I haven't taken the cage out of there yet, because they still go inside to rest sometimes. I also put an old bunk bed ladder in there. It took them awhile before they started using it, too. They also love their new hanging feeder from Tractor Supply. I had ordered one but it hasn't come in yet, so in the meantime I went down there and found 1 in stock, but it was bent up. They gave it to me for $7, yay!
So far, so good.
