Good luck with getting chickens! Looks like you have some advice from locals already. :lol:
Barred rocks and RIRs are good breeds for cold weather.

My first winter with the chickens. Learned tons on this site...so I am hopeful for non frozen chickens this winter. I have RIR's, Buff orpingtons, and wyandottes. Cold hardy they say...so far the only ones to venture out when it is 20 is the RIR's.

Barred Rock Man, thanks for the breed tips! I have a friend up here who has Barred Rocks, and he has said good things about their cold hardiness.
Also, kmpaulick, thanks for sharing your heat lamp strategy with me. I've though a lot about ways to heat the coop, and I think your suggestion of only intermittent heat will be a real cost saver. I'll keep an eye out on CL for chicks and pullets.
