Hey there!
I'm rather new to this kind of format so please bear with me. I've been following BYC for years and never thought to join until this morning for some reason.
I am not overly new to chickens, but am still a bit of a noob and I also do not have any at the moment sadly. I used to have a small flock that was my life, but then I had to move and trying to drive across the state from one end to the other didnt seem very sustainable for a chicken. So I said good bye and they found a new home where they are very happy.
My first chicken experience was a little spur of the moment. I was at tractor supply staring into the bins wishing I could have one but I didnt want a whole slew of them right away as I thought it would be too much of a commitment. So a lady bought the standard amount and then gave me two of them out of the kindness of her heart. And thus my chicken obsession started.
Moon phase (cock) and Fart (hen). Were my pride and joy. I raised them in my home and even had naps with them when they hit the teenage years.
Sadly they didnt make it past being teenagers as moon got out and a puppy decided he was a toy. I then got Fart a Rooster named Roi. He was my pride and joy, primarily because he was a grumpy boy but could not do any damage so I often gave him snuggles. Good times. He disappeared one night, but I'm sure it was a raccoon because the next few weeks or so Fart was caught and torn to pieces. I found her in such disarray AND I found the raccoon on the roof. I had a few choice words, but I decided in that moment to forgive the shit head, because it was probably hungry and was just doing what it knew to do.
However, I was still Heartbroken so I decided to start a new flock. I found the wonderful website if meyer hatchery and ordered my first mail in chicks haha. They came pretty quickly and I remember being so exited to take them home. There was Quasimodo and Hamburger (Silver Spangled Hamburg) Big Bunny (Easter egger), Red (Rhode Island), Lydia (Buff Orpington), Oliva (cinnamon Queen) and finally my big boy Beau whom was a reject rooster because he was a bit saddy like roosters normally are.
I do miss having chickens on the norm. So I live vicariously through Google pictures and blogs Haha. I live in a city that does not allow backyard livestock and it saddens me greatly.
Aside from missing my chickens, I do have three button quails, which I call my mini chickens. They arent as loving and charismatic as a chicken, but they are rather unique and adorable. I have grown to become quite fond of them.
Theres Mama Coco (I got her after watching Coco and the name kind of stuck.), Tarragon and Sage (male). I also had two others, Basil and Parsley but they passed away at the ripe old age of 2 and 3. Female buttons dont typically have very long lives.
I also have 6 budgies:
Bubblegum and Sundae
Sherbert aka Bert and Tofu
Avocado the lone ranger and Ferdinand aka Ferdie Berdie or Grandpa.
I am hoping to get back into chickens someday. But for now I have my adorable quails and silly budgies.
Thanks for being a great community! I am excited to be apart of it!
