Greetings from outside Worcester, Massachusetts. I'm completely new to BYC, but I worked on a petting zoo/farm for six years through high school and college, so I've been around pretty much all farm animals before. I'm receiving four Buff Orpington sexed (f) chicks for my birthday- day-old chicks from the Hardwick Farmer's Co-op scheduled for pick up June 11. We'll be converting a section in an existing shed into a coop (and when I say we, I mean mostly my dad), with a 4x4x12 exterior run. Primary purpose for the chickens will be pets, with the added bonus of the eggs, and compost for the garden/pumpkin patch. Any advice before construction begins or chicks arrive would be greatly appreciated, especially anyone experienced with Buff Orp's or the "Chicken Underground"- any tricks for keeping things clean and odor-free? Plan to use deep litter method. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
