(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am new to chickens, and don't have any yet. But I am interested in setting up a backyard coop and flock next Spring and starting my research now so I wanted to join this community.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

None, but based on space I'm thinking 4 or 5 would be a good number to start with.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live in Chicago with my wife, 3 yo daughter and a cat. I'm interested in starting to raise backyard chickens next year. My wife is not opposed but has heard there are disease dangers for small children. We have a 3 year old with hopes for 1 more in the next year or so. In people's experience is this a legitimate concern or do chickens and little kids get along just fine?

Hi and welcome to BYC. Following basic hygiene practices, as with any pet and all is perfectly fine.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Welcome to the site. Glad you joined.
There are more germs and bacteria filth on Walmart's shopping cart push handles than raising chickens. Exposing yourself and family to good bacteria will only strengthen your immune systems. Sheltering your family from common germs or even simple livestock exposure, will weaken your immune systems.
Germ-phoebes are most likely to become violently ill from washing their hands 20 times a day using anti-bacterial solutions when exposed to a simple bacteria compared to someone who just practices common sense cleaning and not obsessive.

We raised 2 children whom are adults now. Exposed to chickens hands on. I was more worried about them handling legal tender currency or super market bathroom door handles far less than of our poultry.

Again, welcome. GET SOME CHICKENS! Enjoy life!

It is great having you here!

There is not much of a chance for chickens to pass an illness to you. We do not get very many of the same things. I have not been sick from them ever and I was around them from birth
