I'm a long time lurker on the forum. I've thought about joining before now, but I never needed to. There is so much info on here, that any question I've had has already been answered. Thanks for all the wonderful insight I've learned!

My intro.....I've Jennifer, mom to 6 kids and numerous animals. We have chickens, quail, guineas, ducks, rabbits, chukkar, and the "normal" dogs, cats, fish, etc. We love gardening (standard, aquaponics, and hydroponics) and we can most of our food also. If it involves going back to our roots, I want to know more about it ;)

Now to the reason I've decided to join today. This is not the place for this post, but I hope someone will see it. Yesterday I went to Mt. Healthy hatchery to pick up some chicks. This is 10 minutes from me, so I obviously didn't want them mailed. My kids were excited for the new babies, so they came with me. Stepping into the "customer service" building, I immediately had to send my kids back outside. I felt like I had walked into a bar/bowling alley from back in the day. It was soooooooo smoky! Not only is this illegal in our state, I wouldn't want my baby chicks exposed to that.

You're probably thinking...she's a crazy non-smoker. You'd be wrong. I do smoke. But, I don't smoke in my house, car, barn, etc. I take my bad habit out in the great outdoors, away from other people and animals.

You're next argument might be the weather at the time...nope. 70 degrees at the time with a nice breeze and no rain.

Maybe this doesn't bother everyone, but I felt it was worthy of mentioning to those of you who do get them by mail.

Sorry to include a rant with my intro, but I just needed to vent.

Welcome to BYC!

So sorry for your experiences. I think Kelsie has some great advice you and you need to talk with the manager of the Hatchery itself and also possibly report this to the local Agriculture board. This is not good hatchery practices.

But I do welcome you to BYC and so glad you could join!

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! Glad to have you here! You should contact the hatchery!

I would have walked out too - maybe they were just cooking birds that didn't sell.

If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum you can find and post on your state thread. You may be able to find someone in your area that is selling breeds you desire.

The chicks I purchased last year are great and healthy... I am also from the area and upon picking them up I had to wait 15 min after the opened for them to unlock the door. When walking in I got the wonderful smoke smell as well. It was not nice.
