My name is Tanya. My 12 year old son has gotten into having chickens. However, I am so confused. We purchased 2 Long Island Red Roosters and 8 hens back in the summer and we still have NOT gotten any eggs. My son is so disappointed. We are feeding them laying mesh and they have a nesting box however they are not laying. What are we doing wrong? I am so excited to see his face when he gets his first egg...!! Can anyone help us please.?? Thank You for your time.

It may be because it's winter - the shorter days tend to put them off laying, and it's natural. Some people give their chickens some extra light in the coop (14 hours a day, I think I've heard) but it's up to you. Maybe when you got them in summer, they weren't quite ready to lay yet, and as they matured the days started shortening and put the laying on hold.

If they're healthy otherwise, running around and eating, I wouldn't say you have anything to worry about

Hopefully you'll get some eggs in spring!

Hello and Welcome To BYC! X3 there are a lot of reasons they may not be laying yet, time of year/day light hours is a common one. How old are the chickens? Are you sure you have eight hens and two roosters?
