Hello to everyone. We live in australia and are just looking at starting out with the backyard chickens. Does anyone have any ideas on how do you know what chickens to buy if you want them to lay eggs. I have a little mini fox terrier dog and a chinchilla cat. How can I guarantee they won't hurt my chickens

. You'll need to make sure you buy female chickens for eggs. Most sellers can sex adult birds for you. There's no real guarantee when it comes to animals but training can go a long way with your fox terrier.

Hi and :welcome

I'm in Australia too. We have had red sexlink hens for almost 5 years and they're fabulous layers. An egg a day from each of them. You can buy chicks or ready to lay hens from feed stores, the place we go to is called Oliver's... Pets and Plants, I think. It changed name a while ago.

If you have a coop with hardware cloth round the bottom it should be able to keep dogs and cats, as well as other predators, out.

Good luck!

you can either lock up the dog and cat or lock up the chickens with a predator proof coop and run. Predators include cats and dogs .
