I've spent a lot of time on here in the last 2 weeks, so I decided to join.
I was a vet tech for 11 yrs. (dogs and cats). I became disabled with a neurological condition in 2006, so I am home all the time now.
My husband raised chickens when he was a kid and I have always been interested. We got 3 mutt chickens a few years ago from an old neighbor, but about 2 months after we got them the neighbors dog dug under the run and killed them all. (Don't you love it when people ignore the leash law?)
Until last year I was not eager to try it again, but last Easter I was out voted and we got some more. I really got attached to the little boogers raising them in the house from babies. This time we have a much safer place. My husband covered the sides of the run with 1/4 inch square wire, buried part of it in the ground and poured concrete over it. The roof is metal. I told him I didn't want anything getting in there!
My husband, son and I currently have 3 leghorns & 3 rhode island red hens that are a year old this month. We also have (I think) an Aracuana or Americauna hen and rooster that a friend of ours rescued from someone who was neglecting thier flock last summer. The hen lays green eggs. She must be getting old because she lays eggs sporadically.
We get 4-7 eggs a day and have been sharing them with friends and family.
My son has been wanting to hatch some eggs, so I converted our 10 gal aquarium into an incubator, and have been saving some eggs the past few days to start them around the end of the week. (Don't want them hatching on Easter).
I think I have read every thread on here about incubating eggs in the last few days.
I have learned a lot on the forum in just a short time, and it is good to find people who share the interest.
I think I may be trading one addiction for another though.
I've spent a lot less time on Facebook since I found this site.
