then I must write more, passed my 50th birthday, and last year, my oldest son made me a granny
right now I have 18 hens and an Orpington rooster running in my garden, first snow this year, just a sprinkling, but we usually no longer get much of that, since global warming is messing with our climate
As I have mentioned before, I haven't been lucky with Orpingtons, the first hen started pulling feathers before even laying her ( never to be) 1st egg...2 months I tried everything, very bad smelling spray, putting her in with only the rooster, margarine, more meat, nothing helped, and I was afraid the other chickens would start imitating her, so....somebody did the "deed", and I felt very bad, so now only had 1 Rooster and 2 Orpington hens. Then they started laying (but not brooding, this was the only time they didn´t get broody) hooray !!! After a time, the 2. hen started laying eggs without shells, inexperienced, as I was, I tried extra calcium ,but it only got worse, took her to the vet, he diagnosed an infection of the laying bowl, she got antibiotics ( shame about all those eggs I had to toss) and then it went up and down, I think after the 3. visit to the vet ( he told me it wasn´t looking good) she dropped dead 30 minutes after taking her home
so... I put some eggs from my other chickens and let her sit on those
