Hafa Adai (local saying for hello),

My name is Ali and I am originally from Alaska but now live on the Pacific island of Guam. My boyfriend and I just got three chicks two days ago (two Red Rhode Island and one Easter Egger). I am an animal fanatic and also a pretty big worrier... the chicks are doing well so far but I do have a lot of questions... so far the forums have been awesome for me and have answered most of my questions. Can I ask though... does anyone have any suggestions for keeping unwanted PEOPLE away from my chickens? People love BBQ in these parts and a big fat chicken (fatter than the multitude of wild ones on island) is an enticing thing... I'm probably going to put padlocks on the doors of my coop/tractor but I'm the whole structure is light enough to lift up... anyone have any experience with this type of situation?

Thanks so much! Looking forward to exploring the site more.
Ali

I have never had this trouble, but some people do. If I had this issue around my place here, I would keep large dogs at bay to keep my birds safe, trained to go after anyone causing trouble. If that didn't work, a good rifle keeps most humans off the property.

Good luck with your birds and I wish you all the best.

I would build a coop and run with plenty of shade. I lived there several years ago and I would be much more worried about the brown tree snakes. They are long, skinny and get into everything. They climb fences and caused quite a few power outages when I was there.

Could you run a few electric fence wires around the coop and run? Maybe it would fry a few drop in snakes as well. Is there a way you could conceal the chicken area with maybe bamboo panels, so people don't know you have chickens?

That is definitely something to consider. We have lots of bamboo around here and could certainly look into making a visual barrier. Thanks :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Something like a game camera or video, with signs posted? Tie/chain down the coop to concrete blocks etc?

Alright Ali,

Sounds like the Islands are still the same then but about the only suggestion I could give is build a big sturdy Permanente structure
for the chickens to stay in when you are not at home or for the night when you are not outside to watch them this is what we had to
do in the Philippines & Panama to keep the two legged predators out and yes they are worse then the four legged ones ......

Guam as I have heard from my father is rather nice as he visited in 1944 with the 77th Infantry and I do believe he said something
about building a road from the East to the West is that road still there or used just really curious ?????????

Well I've only been here since 2009 so I'm definitely not a guru of Guam's history. There is a road called "Cross Island Road" that runs East to West and that could very likely be it but unfortunately I am not positive :S You can Google Map it though!
