We're a homeschooling family who just moved out to the country, for the most part. We've got a small place near a lake so a small, rooster-less flock is what we'll have. Right now, I've got three Bantams a friend of mine gave me - a Sebright and two BB Reds, one of whom we've just learned is actually a roo. They were hatched in February, I'm not sure of their exact age.

We named them Giblet, Nugget and Drumstick. Giblet started crowing a couple of days ago and this morning I saw him trying to mount Drumstick. I'm pretty sure she is a hen. Nugget is either a hen or a very quiet roo. I'll be getting a couple of full size layers soon, too. The purpose of naming them in the manner in which we did is to help the kids remember that they're not just pets, they are a food source. We're already attached to them, and I'm feeling bad about having to "cull" Giblet, but that's what we have to do. I don't want to disturb the neighbors with a noisy rooster! He's funny, struts around all cocky and sure of himself. They've been so fun to watch!

I've wanted chickens for several years now, and I'm looking forward to this new adventure.

Welcome to BYC

Glad you joined us! I'm sorry, but it looks to me like you've got two little roosters there, not just one...

Thanks! That's what I thought too but she said it was too early to tell what sex they are and it's just the breed. It acts kind of roostery, but no crowing and I haven't seen it try to mount what I'm pretty sure is the hen. Ah, well, the joys of chicken keeping, right?

The quiet roo is probably intimidated by the other. If you rehome him, the silent one would probably start crowing. I always say "Beware of friends bearing chickens." they usually end up roosters

They are such nice looking boys, maybe they could find good homes. Sometimes feed stores will take them.

I'm learning already ha ha!

We had them all out for a bit today and then again this evening. The hen has apparently decided she doesn't want to take any crap from the roos lol. They were quite the show this evening. My husband doesn't see what the fascination with chickens is and we try to explain that they each have personalities and are so fun to watch. But then, I don't get the fascination with NASCAR either. Watching someone turn left for hours at a time is not very fascinating to me!

They really are nice looking roos, maybe I can find a nice home for them. Thanks for the tip on feed stores, @drumstick diva !
