Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
1 week ago today I drove to Portland and picked up our very first batch of Silkies from a breeder. Although our family is new to having chicks, we have many family members that have chickens and a great support system.
How many chickens do you have right now?
Very rough rocky start We started off with 8 and down to 3, approx. 2 weeks old - possible coccidiosis (they are being treated now)
What breeds do you have?
Silkies
What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
How mesmerizing and peaceful they are, their companionship and family pets
What are some of your other hobbies?
Making homemade quilts and gardening
Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My family lives in the country in central-eastern Indiana. My husband is quality control (automotive industry) and I'm a retired hospice nurse. We are raising our 7-year-old grandson (since 4 months of age). We have 4 rescue cats and enjoy our country living. Now that we have settled into our dream home it was time to reach into my passion. My husband made me a lovely 20' x 20' garden and is in the process of building an 8'x4' coop w/an 8'x20' run. We have wild bunnies that live under our deck and the squirrels are mutants (huge). There is a large farm behind our property that grows corn & soybean
Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I started researching and learning about raising backyard chickens about 6 months ago, and more so during the lockdown thanks to CoVid. I've read articles and forum posts on and off during this time period as well. I finally decided to join in hopes of reaching out to others that may know what is wrong with my chicks
