Hey guys...what an awesome forum, lerning a lot. Building my coop from some great ideas from the forum. I am looking to get 4 chickens. 1 for each of my family members. I want egg production because my wife is a baker and I am tired of going to the store every other day. My question is......I want 2 bantams for my 8 year old and 13 year old. What breed do I need for my wife? And whaat breed do I need for myself. Myself I don't care. What breeds get along together and kansas city weather is bi-polar. Cold during the winter and hot and humid during the summer. So please help me with some ideas and thanks.

My number one thing is what type of chickens to the people
around you have

BYC has a breeds Forum you can look through for egg producing
chickens as it sounds like a lot of egg's are used in your house and
this is one of the reasons I use a large size Road Island Red's for
the quantity and Easter Eggers for the Quality of different colored
egg's in the egg carton ....

Bantam cochins and or silkies would be great for your kids. Maybe a red sex link for your wife, they lay lots of eggs. I'm stymied for the breed for you. What do you want from a chicken? Eggs, meat, companionship, golf partner

Well more like a rooster but I can't have one in city limits.....black preferably. Don't want to much eggs and I don't want to eat. More like show.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! You got some good advice and links above.
X2 the Silkies and Cochins are popular pets for children, Silkies may have more of a problem in a mixed flock though and often will need to be kept separated. Orpingtons are another all around breed you might consider.
For pure egg numbers, the commercial White Leghorns for white eggs and Red Sex Links (Red Stars, Golden Comets, ISA Browns etc) for brown are probably the two best egg layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, and some of these come in a lot of pretty colors, Australorps, Orpingtons (again also popular as pets), Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown egg. The most popular green/blue egg layer is the Easter Egger / often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, they tend to be nice birds and the colored eggs are really a hit with kids, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for dark brown eggs.
