Hi! I am new to the forum but have been reading this for ages! I am getting my chickens this Sunday (hopefully) and have already read up to make sure I have all the basics.

Luckily - I have a coop that was at my new house when I moved in - so all I had to do was spiffy it up.

I was around chicks as a kid - they were mostly pets - but it is nice to have pets that contribute eggs in return for their daily feed... ha ha - and I sooooooooo love fresh eggs. It is nice to have a website like this for ideas - didn't have those back in the day.,..

I am 43 - with 2 kids - 22 and 3 (no - that is not a misprint) also 2 cats and a dog...

Thanks for all of the howdy and how-ya-doings...

Okay - had a guy who had offered to sell me 4 hens - told him I would get them in April... he sold em already! grrrrrrr

Went to a couple of swap meets - all they had was roosters - although those RIR guys are gorgeous - really am not looking for a rooster

So - went to TSC - got some chicks - 50 cents a piece - older of course - but hoping since I was able to pick out the hens...

Wasn't prepared for chicks - so am now adjusting things around a bit to keep em warm and safe ...

It's pretty warm here - so if a chick is at least a month old (maybe older - of course the TSC clerk had NO CLUE) - should I still keep a light on them? I have a nice lil warm hutch for them with hay - and out of drafts...

Need all the advice I can get - I don't think I've ever started with em as chicks before.. at least not since I was old enough to do the work myself ... ha ha

I am in Wichita.

Congrats on the chicks!

That is a hard one to answer. I would probably have a light for heat. I have 4 chicks in the basement right now, that are almost 4 weeks old. I just changed the bulb to a lower wattage to get them ready for the big out doors. I will probably make the move next weekend.

One way to gauge is if they are making a racket. If they are cheeping up a storm, something in wrong.

Good luck!!

Well so far I have them in a nice lil hutch I bought from TSC. They are very close to my house - so I think they will be my new best friends... after Wally world of course. So far - they were very nice about me returning the ADULT chicken feed I bought for chick starter. I've left a light on the babies just to be safe. Their hutch is pretty protected. Glad I did - a bit chilly last night. So far they appear happy - and are starting to recognize my voice - So far I have at least one rooster we think - but it's all good. I can handle one if he's docile - if he's aggressive he will be someone's dinner. Not mine - cause I can't do that... lol

I think the rooster already knows his name... Elmo... so he may be a smarty... not sure what his breed is yet - he was a bit of a buff color at first - but sprouting some red feathers on his neck so far... ahhhhhh the suspense

The other names are Zoe, Hannah, Montana, Naughty, and Nice... lol - let the 3 year old name 4 - I named the others...

I have 2 mostly black... 2 light grayish brown and speckled - and then Elmo and Zoe are the buff - whitish ones. Can't find pics that look like em yet on here - maybe when they are older I'll know what I have. Hoping to get some older hens at the state fair this year - we'll see what happens.

Nice to meet ya'll
