Hello from Kentucky!

Hi everyone! I've never had chickens before, but my husband has, and we've decided to start raising some for eggs this year. We are working on making a coop right now out of an old shed we had. We still haven't decided here we are going to get out chicks from. We are looking at mcmurray or Meyer hatcheries as a possibility or may even just go to rural king. Recommendations? We are thinking of getting some Rhode Island reds and some white leg horns. Also, if we go with a hatchery we are going to get some Rouen ducks as well

I've ordered from Meyer before and they're really good. If you go with a hatchery I'd recommend them or Ideal

I have had good luck with Murray McMurray in shipping eggs. They did a great job at packaging and even including extras in case some broke during shipping, which none ever did break. The hatches were great and so were the birds! So if this is any indication as to their live chicks, I would recommend them as a place to get chicks.

I have ordered from both McMurray and Meyer and had great service from both places. I actually have some young white leghorns from Meyer. I do like them a lot but McMurray really brags on their white leghorns so I'd like to try some of theirs too. If I was first ordering I believe I would go with McMurray to try out those leghorns they are bragging about.

Meyer white leghorn roo. One of my favorite birds. Those big wattles did get frostbit during that COLD weather a week or so ago. He is going to loose a little bit of them.

Khaki Campbell ducks lay really well, better than a lot of chickens. They are next on my list.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined us! I'd recommend McMurray as a hatchery; they have average quality (not show quality, but still very pretty) birds and mine have been very healthy.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Both those are good hatcheries, good customer service and both have websites, do like the McM website better to order on. I've really liked the McMurray Pearl White Leghorns as they call them, and their Red Stars and Meyer's Golden Buffs (both Red Sex Links) are really great brown egg layers, actually like them better than RIR. Great looking chickens! Thanks for the advice! I may look into getting some of those ducks as well to try the eggs but I am for sure wanting the Rouen ducks but I mostly want those ducks for pets they are supposed to be very friendly.
