What a helpful website, so glad I joined! Thanks for all the input. I have some homework to do now! I'd love a whole bunch of chickens alas zoning will only permit a max of 6. One day when we have more land I shall not have to narrow it down to one or two breeds.. this is going to be tough!

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Breeds of similar temperament usually get along together so you could get six different breeds ...a colorful egg basket is always fun, and if you pick your breeds right you could have six different colored eggs....

Welcome to BYC. If you are concerned with frozen/frost bitten combs, Buckeyes, EE, Wyandottes, Dominiquers, rose comb Leghorns and many other breeds have combs that are less likely to freee.

If you did get 6 different breeds you can see which work out best for you. Rehome the ones that don't and get more of the ones that do well.

Thanks. I need to see how easy the breeds I want are to come by first but I like the idea of having a few different ones and finding out which breed suits us best.

I live in Maine (Greene) and have 3 barred rocks and 3 Rhode Island Reds. : ) I did some research on which chickens were the most cold hardy, and these came up pretty frequently. They are sweet birds. : )
