Hello. We are new to this site and quite new to owning back yard chickens.
I recently visited Google, like you do, to ask about our chickens and came across an article on here. I did write a reply but can't find the article now. It was someone saying that feeding backyard chickens layers pellets was not always a good idea, so I read some other posts and became quite confused by the end. We bought our 6 chickens from the farmer who also sold us the layer pellets and the oyster shell. They were 15 weeks when we bought them and are now 22 weeks old. 3 of them are laying mostly quite small eggs, but that's fine, we all have to start somewhere. We have two white leghorns, with black markings but one of them sometimes seems to sneeze or cough or squeak. The other white one has sloppy mustardy yellow poo where the others look the normal ice cream cone style. I think the two white ones are laying and one of our speckled ones so far.
So my main worry is obviously the white chicks sneeze and funny poo but also after reading the article about not giving layer pellets I am worried wether to take notes or to just carry on as advised by the farmer and some of the people who posted after the article stated, that layer pellets were good to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read my "war and peace" section and hello everyone xx Donna & my chooks

Welcome! I’m pretty new here as well but I wanted to let you know that we’ve given our hens layer feed and free range for three years with no issues. I’m not sure what the conflict is. Maybe it’s a concern over protein level? Layer pellet is lower than chick starter. Let them forage (if you can safely) or toss them some bugs/ dried soldier fly larva etc. Good luck. Sorry I can’t advise on you slightly ill bird- sometimes it just passes through.
