This is certainly a very welcoming community, thank you for that. :') I've been doing (some) research at the local library in addition to online websites, but I have to say...the library doesn't have many first-hand experiences from people who raise chickens. And...the internet wasn't providing what I was looking for in the slightest --- until I came upon backyardchickens.com

With the so-called 'research' we have done, I think we have decided on getting 4 Plymouth Rocks (also I have seen them called Barred Plymouths and Barred Rocks (I'm not sure which one is correct). They seem to be good egg-layers and they are calm versus some other breeds I looked at. In all honesty what I REALLY wanted was 4 "black breasted brown red old english" chickens because they are SO pretty - and then I wanted a sebright bantam (again, because they are so pretty) but I read that the old english listed previously doesn't lay eggs very much, and that the sebright bantam eggs are very tiny.

In any case, I guess we are getting plymouth rocks and I'm not fond of their coloring at all - they are very boring to me =|

Can anyone suggest a really pretty chicken that lays tasty eggs on a regular basis, is okay with a colder climate (Missouri) - and one that is friendly with their coopmates and their 'humans'? I'm not asking for much am I? *grin*

Thank you again for the welcome(s)!
