I've just inherited two 3yr old Shavers (NZ egg hen) and got 2 Barnevelder Pullets (about 18 weeks) just this weekend.
Really enjoying the chooks, and we've given them our vege garden to free range in over winter and in summer they'll get a couple of the garden beds with weeds to uproot and trees/shrubs to rest in the shade of.

Learning curve is steep, and bed time still causes fights with one of our shavers pecking the rest till dark.

I fear my coop may be a little small 6sq ft for the 4 birds but good roost and I've staggered the roost heights to help stabilise the pecking order.

One day (after my final exams are finished), I'm going to invest a couple of weekends and build my coop, and probably my flock (darn addictive these birds)

Thanks for all the great reading and advice, but I must admit. There is information overload on here, and like kids ask 10 people, get 5 different opinions and theirs are always well behaved

Hopefully finals will be over soon....coops does sound too small. Maybe you can let them out to roam as much as possible?? Just find a shady spot to sit where you can keep half an eye on them while you study for finals. But be careful......watching the chook play will be much more interesting than your textbook.

Thanks for the great welcome.

My coop has 5sqft of roost, and the ladies free range all day. But, what do I look out for if things are getting a bit crowded? I can clad the run, and pop in a couple of extra roosts relatively easily.

Maybe I should link over to coop forum and discuss this there
