Hey there,

Please call me J. My family and I started raising chicken during this covid crisis in March from day 1 chicks. It has been a pretty interesting journey for my wife and kids (2). We have talked about starting a small flock for the past 4 years but finally did it.

  1. Yes, Since March
  2. Flock Size: 9 - 6 laying, 3 younger
  3. Breeds: We have 2 RIR, 2 Isa Brown, 1 Easter Egger Batam, 1 Frizzell, 1 Ameracauna, 1 Silkie and 1 Mint Cream Legbar
    1. Silkie and MCLB came from Chicken Scratch Poultry, shipped from IL.
  4. Coop + Run Size: 8x4 coop elevated by 3ft with a 8x16 run that might be expanded soon.
    1. Future renos? Run Roof and temporary coverings for the walls this winter
  5. Things I am currently looking into?
    1. To winterproof or not to winterproof? Insulate, heat or nothing
    2. Egg flavor - Distinct difference between refrigerated eggs and tableside eggs
    3. Organic feed?
My wife and I work at home virtually for now which has had its good moments. I'm surprised she isn't sick of me yet!! :clap My position is health care related but that's about all I want to delve into here. We love NH, Hike all the time and try to stay active as much as we can.

When we started our flock, this forum was a godsend. It has been nice to get all of my answers very fast and not have to worry about doing it all alone.

Location? Rochester, NH :)

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I install vinyl reinforced tarps to the exterior of my run to block wind, add fresh wood chips to the run and more bedding in the coop to winterize. I also use a thermostatically controlled bird bath deicer in my bucket waterer with horizontal nipples and a heated base fount waterer up on a block to keep it chest height.
