It's not too large. As long as there is plenty of ventilation in the coop, no drafts on the girls and they go to roost with their crops full of their normal balanced diet, they will easily keep themselves warm.

I’m dealing with a back injury

I am too. I know the how frustrating a back injury is when it limits you and you have so many things you want to do. If it is a low back injury, I highly recommend the book by Robin McKenzie: Treat Your Own Back. It is very informative!

Old hens of 10+ can get cold easily, yes like old people they lose muscle mass and some become extremely thin. They can freeze to death in bitter cold temps. I have always paid extra attention to my senior birds, if they seem cold, I do offer up heat, it can save their lives.
