I've been interested in having some chickens for some time now. My family and I just moved though and that put a hamper in our plans. When we first moved here to NM we figured once we did the overhaul on the house that we would get chickens. Well, we finished one room and we were working on getting a small raised bed garden in when we came across a bunch of used 2x4s from my sister who was also doing some home renovation. We then ripped out another wall in our house and I had a whole stack of wood that I needed to get rid of. So, about 5 weeks ago we took the plunge and bought 5 2-day old chicks: A Buff Orpington, a Rhode Island Red, a Plymouth Rock, and two Easter Eggers. Needless to say the last 5 weeks have been crazy trying to convert scrap wood into a coop and remodeling a room at the same time. (I ended up only buying 3 sheets of plywood, 3 sheets of siding, an old window, and some hinges/chain for the coop - total cost of about $100). I still have to add a small run, but it's all done and my brood moved in this weekend. Anyways, here some picks of the results:
I'm very excited to be here and learn what I can to raise these birds well.
