My wife and I recently moved onto a wooded property outside of Blue Ridge in Georgia. We have been looking at this Back Yard Chicken site for a few weeks gathering information and have decided to take the plunge into keeping chickens, mainly for eggs. The local feed store have 6 week old Rhode Island Red pullets (vaccinated), these seem to a good breed to start with. Any starter tips for us please?
Thanks in advance.
Ian

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

You have definitely come to the right place for all the fun and learning! Definitely stop by the Learning Center for all kinds of good reads on getting started and keeping them proper. @Pork Pie has left you the link.

And of course if you have questions along the way, feel free to ask. Welcome to our community! :-)

:frow Hi and welcome! It's wonderful that you've joined the flock here! There is so much information to be had! @DobieLover knows her stuff, coop first then the birds! Chicks will be widely available all spring so no need to rush to get them before your housing is ready. Enjoy your chickening!

@Ian Guttridge - A friendly welcome from your neighbor state over! :welcome

And welcome to BYC and the wonderful world of chicken keeping! So happy to have y'all here and happy to share any info and advice; you couldn't have picked a more friendly, knowledgeable group of people to join! Rhode Island Reds are awesome- we lost our last RIR girl awhile back but she was so sweet and very intelligent. She was clicker trained to ring a bell, and was the fastest one of all our breeds to pick up on it. It's a great thing to teach small flocks to socialize with them!

Blue Ridge sure is a pretty area- we were over there a few years ago on the Scenic Railway and had a blast!

My main starter tip is PREDATOR SECURITY! Make sure to research and build a secure coop and run for your birds. Also I highly recommend investing in a game camera to keep an eye on potential lurkers that may threaten your flock.

:welcome Go get those chicks! :celebrate:wee
If you don’t have a coop ready, chicks will motivate you to get it done. :thumbsup
Since it’s likely to come up, it’s doubtful that the chicks are actually RIR. More likely, they are red sexlink (RSL), and will lay like crazy! My RSL start laying as soon as 16 weeks! Heritage breeds like RIR will likely take 24 weeks.
