Hello everyone! I'm so excited to have an account, and be able to ask questions etc...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My sister and I got seven chickens (4 female and 3 mixed bantams) as chicks in April 2021. My sister has been wanting chickens for years prior to this! Our mom grew up on a cattle ranch, but none of us have ever had chickens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now we have four regular sized hens since ALL THREE of our bantams turned out to be roosters! We live in a neighborhood, so the crowing was getting us into trouble... our roosters now live with a family friend with more land and a large flock.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have three buff orpingtons (Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Clove) and one barred plymouth rock (Pepper). In a couple weeks, we should have day old chicks arriving (Cinnamon is very broody) of various breeds - two wyandotes, a jubilee orpington and a barnvelder.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
It's so much fun to chicken watch in the backyard! I love all their different personalities, and watching them interact with each other. It also encourages me to get outdoors way more, even if it's just to sit outside, or clean the coop.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love kids, reading and writing and playing the piano.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I (17f) have a 14 year old sister (who I share the chickens with) her twin brother and an adult brother. My parents are awesome (and let us get chickens lol). We have two cats (Lucy and Harvey). I attend the local community college and work as a nanny.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been a lurker for close to a year on this website and have gotten such wonderful advice from it, it was only a matter of time before I joined!
