Been lurking for a bit as I will be starting on my backyard chicken journey really soon! I've always wanted chickens and I finally bought my first house this summer that has a lot of space (for a city) and I'm very excited to finally keep some chickens! I'm in the process of building a very over-engineered chicken coop (lets just say... my house is practically a tree house on a steep hill with 81 steps from the street to my front door).

I am looking forward to learning from y'all and hopefully connecting with some local breeders!

PS here's the beginning of the coop build: main structure will be 5 x 10ft with a fenced-in free ranging area thats approx. 900-1000 sqft.

Wow! Your right about that steep hill! Where are you located on this globe?
This is helpful to give you advice for winterizing, and getting your coop preditor proof while making sure you have the correct ventilation direction that will be plentiful but, free from wind drafts.
Are you planning on making your chickens be sheep and free range on a hill side? Lol. I had to ask! Lol
I need a picture of that! Lol.
Anyway, welcome to BYC, we are Egg-cited you decided to stop "Lurking" and begin your "Doing adventure". Can't wait to watch your coop progression. You know, you need to enter the coop contest listed on the front page.

I'm based in Oakland, in the bay area. Pretty mild winters here. I wish I could keep sheep! I am an avid knitter. Predator proofing here is a MUST. This will have to be a chicken Fort Knox. I have two resident great horned owls I hear every night, and today a very large red shouldered hawk on my deck! I've already seen a mountain lion and a bobcat as well!
